Q & A: Indian Food and Beverage
We get quite a few questions from our guests – some have never eaten real Indian food before and want some advice on where to start, while others have concerns about where our ingredients come from and how the dishes are prepared. Below are the answers to some of the most common questions we are asked.
Is it true that all Indian food is really hot and spicy?
Indian food is commonly mistaken as being very spicy, but in truth it has a variety of flavours. There are sweet & savory dishes, mild & creamy, and those with only a medium spice level. In fact, only limited dishes on the menu at Flavours of India are considered hot – we understands that each palate is different and offer a variety of dishes to match your personal preference.
Can you explain the “flavours” of India?
Indian food is a blend of so many different ingredients and has a variety of dishes to choose from, each with their own distinct flavour. At Flavours of India we wanted to share all these great tastes with our guests, and offer a selection that suits each individual – hot & spicy, sweet & savory, or mild & creamy, we have a dish for everybody.
I’ve never eaten Indian food before; what are some dishes you’d recommend I try first?
Chef Chowdhury recommends that those trying Indian food for the first time start with butter chicken, chicken korma, or any of the tandoori dishes. These dishes are prepared with mild spices and are considered by some to be sweet.
After you have tried the mild dishes, ask your server to point out a few of the medium choices to experience something a little more spicy.
What is your Chef’s favourite dish to cook? What is your Chef’s favourite dish to eat?
Chef Chowdhury has two dishes that are his favorites to eat: Rogan Josh, which is a mild spiced lamb dish, and Chicken Tikka Masalla, a medium spiced meal with grilled chicken. Coincidentally, Chef Chowdhury’s favourite dish to cook is Chicken Tikka Mesalla!
Should I make a reservation ahead of time?
Our meals are made fresh to order, and that means our tables fill up quickly. It is always recommended to make a reservation during lunch and dinner times especially on a Friday or Saturday.
Do you supply a delivery service?
For your convenience, Flavours of India offers delivery of each dish on our menu should you wish to eat in the comfort of your own home. We use a local delivery service with fees subject to change.
Do you have gluten-free options available?
At our Indian restaurant Flavours of India we believe in giving you food that tastes great and is healthy too! All of the main dishes on our menu are gluten-free with the only exceptions being naan bread and a few appetizers that use flour (i.e. samosas).
Do you offer Vegan or Vegetarian alternatives?
We have several great vegan dishes on our menu and a full selection of vegetarian options available. And at our Indian restaurant Flavours of India we offer you the choice of turning any dish into a vegetarian meal (i.e. Vegetable Madras, Vegetable Bhoona).
Are peanuts or peanut oil used in your dishes?
Due to the severity of an allergic reaction our Chef never uses peanut oil, but there are some dishes that contain peanuts. If you have an allergy, please notify our staff and we will take the necessary precautions to ensure an allergic reaction does not occur.
Do you cook with ingredients purchased locally?
We use local produce whenever possible; however, there are times when we have to source our ingredients elsewhere. For example, at times local farmers and butchers may experience a poor yield or have low supply, so they not able to fill our orders at those times.
Do you offer discounts?
A 10% discount is available to students and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Do you offer catering services?
Our menu has so many great choices available making it perfect for catering services. Flavours of India offers catering for special occasions and can also host large groups at our location.
To arrange catering or use Flavours of India to host a special event, contact us today and speak with our manager Harun Al Rashid.
I like spicy food; what’s the hottest dish on your menu?
Vindaloo is the spiciest option on our menu, which is a type of curry dish preferred by those who like it hot. However, similar to our vegetarian options, any item we offer can be made as spicy as you want it to be – the exception being the cream-based dishes due to their sweetness.
